How to answer: “What motivates you?

What they’re actually asking

This is a durability check. Motivation that depends on external praise or novelty burns out in month six. Interviewers want a motive that survives boring weeks, because every job has them, and one that this specific role can actually feed.

How to structure your answer

Name a motive that's true and observable in your track record, then prove it with a pattern across jobs, not a one-off. Then connect it to this role's actual daily work. If your motive and the job's reality don't touch, pick a different true motive; most people have several.

Example answer

Watching something I built get used. At my first job I kept a screenshot of the first support ticket that said 'this new flow is so much easier.' That's the fuel. It's why I've always drifted toward customer-facing tools, and it's why this role appeals to me: the feedback loop between your team and users is about a day long.

What sinks people

  • "Money" alone, or an obvious lie that ignores money entirely
  • Abstract nouns with no evidence: "growth," "impact," "excellence"
  • A motive this job visibly cannot feed, which predicts your own churn
