How to answer: “How do you handle tight deadlines and pressure?

What they’re actually asking

Everyone claims they work well under pressure, so the claim itself is worthless. The interviewer is listening for a system: what you actually do differently when time collapses. People with a system describe steps. People without one describe feelings.

How to structure your answer

Describe your triage process in concrete steps: how you decide what gets cut, when you tell stakeholders, how you protect quality on the part that ships. Then prove it with one story where the deadline was real and the process held.

Example answer

First thing I do is shrink the scope, not the sleep. When a client moved a launch up two weeks, I split the feature list into must-ship and can-follow, got the client to sign off on the split in writing, and we shipped the core on the new date with the rest landing ten days later. They renewed. The instinct to protect scope quietly and miss the date is the one I've trained out of myself.

What sinks people

  • "I thrive under pressure" with no mechanism behind it
  • Heroics as strategy: all-nighters are a red flag to good managers, not a badge
  • Never mentioning communication. Silent scrambling scares interviewers.
