How to Pass a Phone Screen (What Recruiters Are Actually Looking For)

The phone screen feels low-stakes. It's not. Most candidates get eliminated here, before a hiring manager ever sees their name. The recruiter you're talking to has done hundreds of these calls and can tell within 90 seconds if you're prepared.

What recruiters are screening for

It's not technical depth — that comes later. Phone screens filter on four things:

1. Communication — can you explain things clearly? Do you ramble?
2. Motivation — do you actually want this job or are you just applying everywhere?
3. Fit — does your experience match what the role needs?
4. Red flags — anything in your background or tone that raises concerns

The questions that will come up

Phone screens are predictable. Prepare sharp answers for these and you're through:

• "Tell me about yourself" — 60-90 seconds, not your life story
• "Why are you interested in this role?" — be specific to the company, not generic

The "why this company" answer

This question kills candidates who haven't done research. "I love your culture and growth opportunities" is a non-answer. Every company says that about themselves.

Find one specific thing — a product decision, a recent launch, a piece of their engineering blog, something a team member wrote — and reference it. That's what makes you stand out.
